On Friday 4th July, our campaign team was out in force at the Newton Aycliffe Street Food Market, held outside Baccanalia on Beveridge Way. We’re incredibly grateful to the organisers—especially the team at Baccanalia—for welcoming us and giving us space to speak with local residents.

From 3pm to 8pm, our volunteers were on hand to chat, share information, and raise awareness about the proposed Fornax hazardous waste incinerator. Despite the drizzle at times, the market was buzzing with energy—live music, amazing food from local vendors, and a fantastic community atmosphere. But for some people, it was also the first time they’d heard about the incinerator plans.
Throughout the afternoon and into the evening, we spoke to hundreds of residents—families out for a bite to eat, young people curious to learn more, older residents with long memories of industrial change in Newton Aycliffe. The message was clear: most were shocked this could be happening so close to home, and deeply concerned once they understood the potential risks.
From air quality to long-term health impacts, and the lack of genuine public consultation—residents voiced valid fears and frustrations. Many signed up for updates on the spot, took flyers to share with friends and neighbours, and committed to joining our campaign efforts.
Our incredible volunteers—wearing campaign high-vis vests, armed with QR code lanyards, and always ready to listen—made a huge impact. Their presence turned curiosity into awareness, and awareness into action. We had everything from printed leaflets, documents of what they plan to burn, focused objection guidance, to leaflets explaining how residents can object and get involved.
This kind of grassroots outreach is at the heart of our campaign. It’s about having real conversations, face-to-face, in the places where community happens.
We’re planning more events like this over the summer—so if you missed us this time, keep an eye out. Or better yet, join us. The more voices we have, the louder we become.
Huge thanks to everyone who stopped by, asked questions, and offered their support. And a special thank you again to Baccanalia and the market organisers for backing local community action.
